The first pictures of chickens were found in Europe on Corinthian pottery in the 7th century BC. In ancient Greece, chickens were considered a rare and very prestigious food. An early domestication of chickens may have occurred in Southeast Asia, since the word for domestic chicken is part of a language that was spoken in Asia. Chickens were spread by Polynesian sailors and finally reached Easter Island in 12th century BC, where they were most likely the only domestic animal.
