They are very noble animals, and I believe they deserve some respect. So here is their story. This information and the info from the coming volumes are from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken#Chickens_in_history

The first pictures of chickens were found in Europe on Corinthian pottery in the 7th century BC. In ancient Greece, chickens were considered a rare and very prestigious food. An early domestication of chickens may have occurred in Southeast Asia, since the word for domestic chicken is part of a language that was spoken in Asia. Chickens were spread by Polynesian sailors and finally reached Easter Island in 12th century BC, where they were most likely the only domestic animal.

Recruiting for the Army

Blog Insert #25
Recruiting for the Army

Not many people would sign up for the army. I'm not saying that working in the Army is a bad job. They've done great things for our country, and we appreciate it. However, to me it seems like it's not the best job in the world. It takes a lot of guts to shoot another man, and not many people could do it. Apparently the Army knew this too. They had to figure out a way the draw young men and women to this career. But how? Eventually, they figured out a way to reach stubborn teenagers: video games. Makes sense, right? The Army created a place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania called the Army Experience Center. The Army Experience Center is a state-of-the-art facility, the only one of its kind, that allows teens to play virtual combat games. It has attracted youths as young as 13 to come and visit. The cool thing about the whole thing is that it gets younger citizens to start thinking about joining the Army. Whether this experiment ends up being successful or not, it is certainly an eye-catcher for the people who walk by it.

Most Popular Pet Names

Blog Insert #24
Most Popular Pet Names

Every time a person gets a pet, at either PetSmart or a shelter, they face one dilemma: what should I name my pet? Here's a list of the most popular pet names, with my comments.

Max. Of course, it had to be Max. Probably the most original name in the world right? WRONG!

Tigger. This, on the other hand, is one of the most original names in the world. At least, it would be, if so many people hadn't chosen it.

Jake. Second in least originality to Max.

Tiger. A difference of one "g" from #2. Clever.

Buddy. This is assuming that the pet is a good one.

Smokey. Is this good or bad?

Maggie. Not bad, I guess.

Bear. Imagine this conversation: "So, who are you entering in the dog contest?"- "Bear."

Sam. Nice and simple.

Kitty. A dog named Kitty. That's a new one.

After a long search for the most credible website, this information came from: http://www.bowwow.com.au/top20/index.asp

Most Polluted Cities on Earth

Blog Insert #23
Most Polluted Cities on Earth

I'm sure there are many of you out there who are big on helping out the environment. Well, here are the places that need the most help. You may not have heard of some of these cities, but that's okay.

Linfen, China. Because of the huge amount of car emissions in China, Linfen is a soot-filled city. 3 million people are affected by this.

Norilsk, Russia. Founded as a Siberian slave labor camp, Norilsk now affects nearly 1.5 million people due to mass nickel mining and processing.

Chernobyl, Ukraine. Everybody's heard of Chernobyl, right? For those people who don't, Chernobyl was the site of a large nuclear power plant. When it exploded in 1986, it released 100 times more radiation than the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Initially, it was thought that 5.5 million people were affected, but that is being disputed.

Sumgayit, Azerbaijan. I know what you're thinking: where the heck is Azerbaijan? I don't know either. Anyways, Sumgayit is polluted by organic chemicals and oil and affects the lives of 275 thousand people.

More details on these and other cities can be found at: http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/0,28757,1661031,00.html

2008, Come and Gone

Blog Insert #22
2008, Come and Gone

2009 is now upon us. By the way, the events are not listed in chronological order.

The Stock Market. Overnight, people lost millions of dollars they had so carefully invested. And the problems are still going on as we enter 2009. This is one of the issues the new president must fix. Bringing us to...

Obama! Barack Obama, a senator from Illinois, becomes the first African-American president ever to be elected into office, beating out the Republican representative John McCain and his vice president pick, who was the subject of many jokes, Sarah Palin. His inauguration is one of the most hyped one ever.

Death Toll in Iraq reaches 4000. President Bush may be remembered for the wars he left behind, and all the people who died serving their country.

Giants upset Patriots in Super Bowl. The Phils erased a 25 year drought in which the city of Philadelphia did not win a single championship in the four major sports: football, basketball, baseball, and hockey.

Saturday vs. Sunday

Blog Insert #21
Saturday vs. Sunday

Saturdays and Sundays. These two days make up the weekend. For people between the ages of 5 and 18, Saturday and Sunday is like an oasis in the middle of the desert. It is a relaxation period between the school days of Friday and Monday. Now here's a question: which is better? Here we go. I consider Saturday to be better than Sunday because on Sunday, you are hampered by the fact that the weekend will soon end and you will have to go to school. Also, on Saturday you get to procrastinate, but on Sunday, you have to atone for your procrastination. Funny how that works. They nest on the ground and usually lay about two eggs.

Shakespeare

Blog Insert #18
Shakespeare

In the 8th grade, we're currently reading "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by William Shakespeare. Apparently, the message was from 1969! In New York City! The bottle rode the currents all the way down to the Carolinas where a family on vacation found it on the beach. The person who sent off the bottle in 1969 was a fire fighter who worked in the New York Fire Department and enjoyed fishing. Unfortunately, the man died about 3 or 4 years ago. I thought it was cool that a regular person cast off a bottle with a message, which outlived himself. He kind of left a legacy by leaving the bottle. Suddenly, random noises come out of the grave. The two guys go to the funeral director and ask "Why are there weird noises coming out of Beethoven's grave?" and the funeral director replies "Oh, don't worry, he's just decomposing."

Once there was a snail who wanted to buy a car, so he went to the car dealer and said "I want a red car with racing stripes and a big S on the side." and the car dealer asked "Why do you want a big S on the side?" The snail replied "So when I drive past some people, they'll say 'Look at that escargo."

There is a building that is in the middle of a flash flood. The building has two floors. A man named Jimmy is on the first floor. As the water in the first floor rises, a boat came to Jimmy with a man in it. The man says "Get in the boat!" but Jimmy says "No, I believe God will save me." Eventually, the water rose too high and Jimmy had to go to the second floor. Again, a boat comes with a man in it and the man says "Get in the boat!" but Jimmy refuses and says "I believe God will save me." Then the water submerges the second floor and Jimmy was forced to go onto the roof. A helicopter came to him and the pilot yelled "Get in the helicopter!" but the stubborn Jimmy said "No, I believe God will save me." Unfortunately the building collapsed and Jimmy died. Jimmy, who was now in heaven, went to God and asked "Why didn't you save me?" and God replied "I tried! I sent you two boats and a helicopter!"

(This joke is based on a law. Go look it up after you read it.) There is an island with dolphins on it. The island is divided into two by a river, and all of the dolphins are on one side. The dolphins are immortal, because they eat seagulls. As long as the dolphins eat seagulls, they stay immortal. Then, one day, they ran out of seagulls on their side of the island. So they sent one dolphin to cross the river and look for seagulls on the other side. There is a bridge that goes over the river. So the dolphin starts to cross the bridge and found a sleeping lion sitting in the middle of the bridge. The dolphin manages to jump over the lion without waking him up and made it to the other side. He captures some baby seagulls and goes back to the bridge. He sees the sleeping lion again and just barely manages to cross the lion. As soon as he gets back on his own side of the island, he is caught by some policemen. The policemen say "You're under arrest." but the dolphin says "What did I do?" The policemen reply "You took underage gulls across a stately lion for immortal porpoises. HA HA HA HA... (if you didn't get the hint, that was the dumb joke)

This is probably the most popular topic write about now, so I thought I'd contribute to the never ending discussion on who's going to win.
The presidential race is heated up as we head into the beginning of October. No one is quite sure who is going to win. Although most of us here at HB Woodlawn support Obama, (I think) John McCain is doing just as good as Obama in terms of the actual race.
I support Obama because he would be a good change in the Oval Office. Think about it. George Bush has had the last 8 years trying to command this country well. Instead, he has done quite the opposite. Not only has he ruined the situation in Iraq, but the economy is failing as well. Hopefully Obama will end this and be a positive asset to the country.

Global Warming

Blog Insert #2
Global Warming

Since this blog will involve mostly random topics, I will refer to one one somewhat relevant topic for this all-important 2nd blog insert.
Global warming has been a problem for a pretty long time now. Problem is, no one cared about it at all until very recently. There are lots of people who say that global warming is fake, untrue, and that the Earth will take care of itself. WRONG! Global warming is the real deal, and hopefully those common doubters will get some sense into their head and pay attention to what’s going on in the world around them.
Normally, this paragraph would be dedicated to explaining what global warming is and all that other stuff, including ending this blog insert, but I’m sure all you people know what global warming is. So, now would be a good time to go off topic. I like squirrels. Most people like squirrels. The reason they are so entertaining is because they twitch a lot. Twitching is always entertaining.

Politics, Chickens, and Assorted Vegetables

Blog Insert #1
Politics, Chickens, and Assorted Vegetables

Okaaaaaay… so I’m supposed to be writing about something I have an opinion about for my first blog insert, but I have an opinion on a lot of things. Where to start? First off, Democrats are so much better than the Republicans. I’m not just saying that because everyone everywhere hates Bush (although Bush is a good representation of the Republicans). Republicans in general have not helped the world. Actually, quite the opposite. Five of the last seven presidents have been Republicans, so the Democrats really haven’t gotten much of a chance to take over. Ever heard of Richard Nixon? I thought so.
Secondly, the chicken came before the egg. There seems to be a lot of fuss over the topic. It seems logical that some random animal could evolve into a chicken, who would lay the first egg. Think about it. How would an egg evolve anyways?
Last but not least, potatoes are the best vegetables ever. Honestly, is there any other vegetable that offers so much versatility? You can bake them, eat them raw, or cut them up, fry them and send them to France. Thus, some French fries are born. Also, most people don’t like vegetables such as broccoli, beets, and eggplants. Eggplants are purple! PURPLE!

Your blog is ready

Just start a new post!
